First, we are delighted to announce Common Shade, a new series of talks and moderated conversations exploring death and its relationship to art, culture and history. The series is coproduced by Greenwood Cemetery and will take place in their gorgeous historic chapel! We'll begin the series this Tuesday, June 16, with Catherine Gallant on Isadora Duncan’s Dances of Mourning (Tickets and more infohere) and, on August 11, we'll welcome Dr. Seth A. Gopin on the Rural Cemetery in Paris and Beyond (Tickets and more info here).
Other newly announced events include a Letterpress Workshop at Woodside Press with Davin Kuntze (Sunday, July 26th, $85/ $65 for members, Tickets and more here); A reprise of our H.P Lovecraft Brooklyn Guided Tour with Jane Rose (Saturday, June 27th, $20, Tickets and more here); our newest iteration of the Dilettanti Society Happy Hour Presented by Art in the Age with special guest collector Ronni Thomas of The Midnight Archive (Thursday July 9th; $20 / $12 Members; Tickets and more here) and a new iteration of our popular Victorian Hair Art Workshop with Master Jeweler Karen Bachmann (Saturday, August 8th, $150 (includes museum admission), Tickets and more info here.)
We also hope you join us in celebrating our first birthday at our day-long "Festival of Arcane Knowledge" on Saturday July 18, featuring MC Evan Michelson of TV's Oddities and short talks by Harold Schechter on violence in entertainment; Dr. Neal Goldsmith on psychedelics and death (based on his multi-sold out lecture); Douglas Rushkoff on "Living Taxidermy and the Real Housewives of the OC,"Dan Smith on books bound in human skin; Robert Schneck on "Auto-decapitants"; Jessica Glasscock of the Metropolitan Museum on "Fashionable Mourning" in the 19th century; alchemist Brian Coitnor on the use of blood on alchemical preparations; and Karen Bachmann on spontaneous human combustion. Other offerings will include a show and tell featuring a real Egyptian mummy head with Mike Zohn of TV's Oddities; masonic magic lantern projections by Joel Schlemowitz; new episodes of Morbid Anatomy Presents with filmmaker in residence Ronni Thomas; requiem listening with Carl Schoonover and music from the land of the fairies with Doug Skinner; a taxidermy demonstration by taxidermist in residence Katie Innamorato; hair art demonstrations, quirky tours, and much more! There will also be complementary beer while supplies last.
The day will conclude with a Devil's Masquerade afterparty featuring a special appearance by the devil himself, musical performances by Angela Di Carlo and Milf and Dilf; vintage demonic film clips curated by David Cory; delightful complimentary cocktails; thematic music by DJ in residence Friese Undine, and a devil costume contest with prizes!
